About Marismas del Río Piedras y Flecha del Rompido Natural Park

Located in the province of Huelva, Andalucía, Marismas del Río Piedras y Flecha del Rompido Natural Park protects one of the most important estuarine and dune ecosystems in southern Spain. The park encompasses the brackish waters of the Piedras River marshes as they meet the Atlantic Ocean, alongside the characteristic ‘flecha’ or sandspit of Rompido, a dynamic geomorphological feature that continually shapes the coastal landscape. This natural park covers a mosaic of habitats including salt marshes, tidal flats, dune fields, pine groves, and Mediterranean shrublands. These diverse environments support a wealth of flora such as halophytic plants, native pine species, and dune stabilizers. The park is internationally recognized for its ornithological richness, hosting migratory and resident bird species including herons, flamingos, terns, and various waders, making it a prime spot for birdwatchers. Recreational activities abound with marked trails for hiking and biking, guided kayaking in the estuary, and opportunities for photography and nature study. The park’s coastline features pristine beaches and traditional fishing villages adding to its cultural appeal. Visitors can explore the Flecha del Rompido sandbar with its pristine dunes, which provide sheltered habitats for nesting birds and act as natural coastal defense. The park also plays a vital role in environmental education and conservation, providing insight into coastal dynamics and wetland ecology. Its accessibility from nearby towns makes it a favored destination for short excursions or extended nature visits, combining ecological splendor with outdoor adventure.
